HONG KONG will continue to attract Japanese investment and be its gateway to China after the handover, Raymond Ch'ien Kuo-fung, managing director of the Lam Soon group, says.

Mr Ch'ien, speaking yesterday after the 18th plenary session of the Hong Kong-Japan and Japan-Hong Kong business co-operation committees, said China had great appeal for Japan and Hong Kong.

He said while Japan continued to invest in the territory, Hong Kong-Japanese joint-venture investments in China would increase.

'In the past four years, the economic growth of Japan was nearly zero per cent, but the exchange rate of the yen had been more stable in these three months. Japanese consumers are more optimistic,' Mr Ch'ien said.

He said the strengthening yen would lead to increasing investment in Hong Kong, China and other Asian countries.
