I APPLAUD Nicholas James Allan (South China Morning Post, January 17) for criticising the Post's outdated categorisation of articles under the heading 'women', particularly because of the absence of a similar section labelled 'men'.
The articles that generally appear in women's pages tend to promote the tired old stereotype that the woman's sphere of interest is limited to beauty, gossip, child-rearing and domestic matters. And, by definition, that men are not interested in these things. Like a number of my female friends and acquaintances, I read or scan all of the 'hard news' appearing in the newspaper.
It is interesting to note how many of the paper's articles are written by or about women: Anson Chan, Fanny Wong, Christine Loh, Winnie Chung, Dr Rose Ong, et al. Are they among the intended audience for your 'women' section? MARTHA DAY BOESEL Mid-Levels
