CHINESE authorities are considering buying Spanish naval technology to modernise the country's armed forces, according to a spokesman for a Spanish shipbuilder.

A delegation from the state owned firm, Bazan de Construcciones Navales, is visiting China to present its products.

The Chinese Government was particularly interested in aircraft carriers, like one Spain recently built for Thailand, the spokesman said.

'China is interested in the naval technology applied on the aircraft carriers,' he said.

The 12,000-tonne boat Bazan built for Thailand can launch any type of fixed-wing aircraft because of technology developed by the Spanish shipbuilder.

The Asian country spent about 45 billion pesetas (about HK$2.78 billion) for the aircraft carrier, launched last week.
