PROMISING teenager Chan Fuk-ping is on the threshold of becoming the first Chinese player to be picked in a Hong Kong Sevens squad after he was singled out for special treatment at this Sunday's sevens trials by national coach George Simpkin.
Simpkin revealed yesterday that he will ask one of the senior First Division sides to include Fuk-ping in their team for the Bill Riach Sevens at Police Boundary Street this Sunday.
The local club tournament will also double up as the national trials to pick the territory's initial squad for the March 29-31 Hong Kong Sevens and the Fiji Sevens on March 14-15.
'I want to give him as much opportunity as I can to show what he has got. He has been outstanding at the national 15s squad training and he must be given the chance to play with better players at the sevens,' Simpkin told Sports Post yesterday.
Fuk-ping is among the 45-strong national squad currently in training twice a week for the South Korean tour of Hong Kong early next month and the ground-breaking Pan Pacific Series later this year.
Fuk-ping plays for Third Division side DeA in the league and has not had much opportunity to play at a higher level, although he was drafted in last season by Valley who were shorthanded for a First Division game.
