Extra appendage

THE appendix, which is about 9.1 centimetres long in adults, but can be longer, has no known function.

Some biologists believe the appendix was important at one time and became no longer useful. In some animals, however, the appendix is very important. It holds the bacteria needed to digest certain plants.
