IN 1993, Michael Jackson will die mysteriously, possibly in prison. AIDS will be eradicated by a vaccine discovered at the end of the year.

Deng Xiaoping will die, Li Peng will disappear and Zhao Ziyang will be back in politics. The world will be free of major natural disasters (unless you count the death of Michael Jackson, presumably).

These are the predictions of Nallur Dasan, an astrologer of Portland Street, Kowloon.

There are always a lot of forecasters around at the beginning of a new year.

On February 1 last year in this newspaper, fung shui expert Henry C.Y. Lee made a prediction for 1992: ''The Year of the Monkey will be a year of stability for the territory . . . Faith in the future will gradually become stronger.'' Hmm. Not exactly right, Henry.

To get the forecasting business into perspective, and to make Mr Lee feel better, here are some great predictions of the past: ''Stock prices have reached a permanently high plateau.'' - Yale Professor Irving Fisher two months before the Great Crash of 1929.
