LEGISLATORS yesterday threw their weight behind a call for the British Government to grant visa-free access to Special Administrative Region (SAR) passport holders after 1997.
They also called on London to continue giving such access to British National (Overseas) passport holders from Hong Kong, and to give its blessing as soon as possible.
Tabling the motion, Liberal Party legislator Howard Young Hau-wah said: 'It is unimaginable that there would be no freedom of entry and freedom of travel. Our way of life, and our success in international trade is built on this kind of freedom.
'If the British Government now wants to find excuses and throw tantrums, it will adversely affect British interests,' he said.
Of the six million people in the territoryabout 2.5 million hold BNO passports, while 1.3 million people hold Certificates of Identity.
Members said the British Government should not worry about security arrangements for the production and issue of SAR passports.
