LEGISLATIVE Councillor Emily Lau is admired for her strong, outspoken character and self-confidence. She says she gained such attributes from her years of education and in particular a year of study in Britain.
Ms Lau was a news reporter at TVB. After three years, she felt there was little more to learn and decided to continue her studies.
In 1981, she left the station as senior producer and went to Britain to gain her Master's degree.
She read an International Relations Masters of Science course at the London School of Economics and Political Science at the University of London.
'To make ends meet, I had to work as London correspondent for TVB. Although this aggravated my study burden, in a sense it enriched my life,' she said.
'If chances arise, I hope to leave my work and return to school campus. But hopefully by then I will be a full-time student and can really enjoy study life.' Asked why she still wanted to study further Ms Lau said: 'I believe that education can make a person distinguish right from wrong. It can help to develop a person's thinking method and analytical power. Such qualities are important to everyone no matter what position he or she is holding.
