THE territory's Solicitor-General Daniel Fung QC promised yesterday to give Americans a 'warts-and-all' view of Hong Kong's future during his tour of the US.

But he said he had no crystal ball and would tell them he could make no guarantees for the territory after 1997.

But Mr Fung, who is widely tipped to become the next attorney-general, was less transparent about his own future. Asked if he would like the post, he replied: 'I've no views on that whatsoever.' He also remained tight-lipped on speculation that the appointment of the first local attorney-general might now be delayed until after the naming of the first chief executive of the Special Administrative Region.

Mr Fung and his three-man delegation will leave for the United States tonight to meet politicians, businessmen, investors, lawyers and journalists.

The two-week trip takes in New York, Washington, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.

He will focus on the continuity of an independent judiciary after 1997, the impact of Hong Kong law on China, human rights, and the territory's role internationally.
