IF nothing else, Doctor Zhivago (Pearl, 11.40 pm) is one of the best films with the word 'doctor' in the title. The best was probably the 1931 version of Doctor Jeckyll And Mr Hyde, although Dr No, Dr In The House and Dr Who And The Daleks are all in the running.

It was directed by David Lean and does for snow what Lawrence Of Arabia did for sand.

The story, compacted from Boris Pasternak's book to the point at which it sometimes doesn't make much sense, seems secondary to the settings.

Doctor Zhivago is beautifully photographed and meticulously directed - as you would expect from Lean - but ends up being great to look at, not to listen to.

It is also seat-squirmingly long, coming home at a little over three hours.

That story goes as follows: Moscow doctor gets caught up in World War I, is exiled for writing poetry, forced into partisan service and separated from his only love.
