AND we thought it was just colourless Canto-pop! Metro Broadcasts took Hong Kong music to new heights when they gave out their Hit Radio awards according to music genre instead of the usual most popular songs or singers.

Among the awards Hit Radio threw out were the best [Canto-pop] jazz fusion, rhythm and blues, rock, dance, alternative and even adult-oriented rock. We all know Faye Wong sings 'alternative' Canto-pop - that comes from emulating and covering singers such as Bjork and the Cranberries - but bet you didn't know Andy Lau is singing the blues these days. Well, neither did he, apparently.

When his new hit single A Bird Searching For Love was awarded the best blues song of the year, Lau was visibly puzzled. His 'what-me-a-blues-singer?' look led very quickly to an audible 'I didn't even know that it was a blues song'.

We guess the production crew on the panel couldn't tell which songs were which, either. They didn't seem to be able to get anything right throughout the night: microphones broke down, video clips refused to play and props didn't work. Where new heights are breached, we guess new lows will be reached.
