BEIJING yesterday started a campaign to celebrate the first anniversary of an eight-point manifesto by Communist Party boss Jiang Zemin.

Although the campaign will formally start on Tuesday, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) has already started to release speeches by overseas compatriots supporting Mr Jiang.

The campaign will reach its peak on Tuesday when most Beijing leaders join Mr Jiang to mark the first anniversary of his agenda on Taiwan.

Last year Mr Jiang outlined his game-plan towards the Kuomintang stronghold calling on Taiwan to accept Beijing's 'one-country-two-system' formula and reunite with the mainland.

But Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui shunned the offer and put forward his own six-point agenda urging Beijing not to use force against the island.

During the celebration, senior party figures and government officials will make speeches on reunification.

State-controlled media will also release programmes and publish articles to criticise Mr Lee for 'splitting the motherland'.
