THE Governor, Mr Chris Patten, and his wife, Lavender, yesterday put their best feet forward for charity when they started off the Community Chest's final Hongkong Walk of the season.

The couple joined 20,000 entrants for the first kilometre of the 10 kilometre walk, which began at the South China Athletic Stadium on Caroline Hill Road, Causeway Bay.

Mr Patten, who is patron of the Community Chest, said he and his wife would cover the full distance in one of the events planned in the next financial year.

More than 80 teams from companies across the territory greeted the Pattens, who spent 20 minutes talking with walkers before they cut the ribbon to begin the last of four events for the 1992/93 season.

They then led the walkers out of the stadium and down a stretch of Caroline Hill Road before leaving the entrants to cover the remaining distance.

Community Chest chairman Mr William Lam said: ''We would welcome the Governor and Mrs Patten to join us at a future walk.'' Yesterday's event was expected to raise $6 million.
