A TEAM of detectives was yesterday hunting the killer of a Vietnamese boat person inside High Island camp following a gang fight in the early hours of the morning.

Two other boat people were injured during the flare-up which involved more than 40 detainees in the north section of the centre.

The dead man, 24-year-old Pham Van Da, was understood to have been stabbed through the chest with a home made spear.

Fighting broke out shortly after midnight yesterday. Correctional Services officers found two injured men inside a hut after rushing to the scene.

Pham Van Da was certified dead at the Prince of Wales Hospital at 3.50 am.

A 21-year-old man who sustained cuts to his left thigh was treated at the camp clinic.

A third man, aged 27, found in a neighbouring hut with cuts to his head, was taken to hospital but later discharged.

An insider said tensions had been mounting for some time because of a gang of trouble makers. Other detainees were fed up with the intimidation and wanted to make it clear they would no longer be bullied.

The dead man had been in Hong Kong less than a year. Although he was with the main gang, he was not one of the key troublemakers.

 The fatal stabbing happened when one side ordered the other to surrender and put down their weapons.

Pham Van Da, who was thought to have been armed, was attacked after running off.
