I FELT compelled to write to these columns as I am worried by the overtones that Beijing is making towards Taiwan and this also concerns all of the people of Hong Kong, as most of us are Chinese. Beijing claims that Taiwan is a renegade province of the motherland and that Taiwan is indisputably part of China. However, Beijing also says it will not hesitate to take military action against Taiwan if the elections in March are not to Beijing's liking. This means, therefore, that China will attack and will injure and kill its very own Chinese people - Chinese men, women and children. If this was to happen, the world would rightly condemn the Chinese Government for its actions. This is a prospect which frightens me. I have only just recovered from the mental scars of the June 4 incident, when Chinese people fought with other Chinese people and killed them. We must not let this happen again. There must be a peaceful solution. Any blood shed needlessly, would set the mainland back 100 years. This is not 1949. China's leaders must realise that Taiwan has to be nurtured and coaxed back, not kicked and punched into submission as this will not work. It will only make things worse. I hope blood is not spilled just to satisfy the foolish pride of two old men. NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
