WORLDWIDE demand for semiconductors is set to outstrip supply because of the booming multimedia sector, according to the vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Electronics Association.

So Yuk-kwan said yesterday that research by the United States-based Semiconductor Industry Association forecast 25 per cent growth in the consumption of semiconductors this year.
Within that figure, the US, which is one of the biggest exporters of Hong Kong-produced semiconductors, is expected to see growth of more than 26 per cent.
Demand is also tipped to soar for liquid crystal displays, revenue from which had grown on average 35.5 per cent since 1991.
