I AM appalled to see that the bloody and cruel spectacle of Portuguese bullfighting is being brought to Macau and publicised in Hong Kong. To present the baiting and stabbing of a trapped animal as entertainment is contemptible. The colourful capes, pageantry and macho posturing do not excuse this torture. Where is the so-called honour and bravery in forcing bulls and horses into this terrifying environment? There is enough cruelty in this world without importing it from one country to another. Should the hurting of frightened animals be encouraged as a pleasurable pastime? To do so for financial gain is despicable. It is a shame that in Macau the culture of Portugal should be presented as one of backward, barbaric 12th century traditions. I hope that this event is a financial loss and is never repeated in any country. SHEILA MCCLELLAND Lamma
