THE next two weeks promise plenty in terms of performing arts: heroes from Chinese literature will be resurrected; the torment of an innocent man is translated from Kafka; and the genius of a famous composer and conductor is remembered through film and live music.

Yesterday's heroes come to life when guest conductor Yip Wing-sie and the Hongkong Chinese Orchestra breathe new life into Chinese legends this weekend.

''A Tribute to Heroes'' features the works of composers inspired by stories such as The Gall and the Sword by Kwok Dick-yeung, Chen Ning-chi's Sword Dance and Lady General Wu Guiying Leads Her Armies to War by Yang Muyun.

The programme will be performed on January 15 and 16 at the Hongkong Cultural Centre Concert Hall and on January 17 at Tsuen Wan Town Hall Auditorium.

PIANIST Dmitri Alexeev tackles Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No 2 in the final performances of the Russian Romantic Festival by the Hongkong Philharmonic. Also on the programme are Stravinsky's Suite No 2 and Rachmaninov's Symphony No 2.
