NOBEL Peace Prize candidate Wei Jingsheng is in solitary confinement at the same labour camp and apparently in the same cell where he has already spent four years, says his brother Wei Xiaotou.

On Monday, his younger brother and sister visited Wei for the first time since his detention in Nanpu New Life Salt Camp, north of Tianjin, where the dissident was sent last month.

'He is confined in a small cell of his own in a courtyard just as he was before his release in 1993,' his brother said. 'Within that area he is comparatively free.' 'His physical condition is OK but he is a little thinner. He suffers from arthritis and has some difficulty in walking but he is in good spirits,' Mr Wei said.

'I sent some books to him including the collected speeches of American presidents, Famous American Speeches, The Power of Heresy and a book on human rights legislation.

'As I knew that he had no time to do any reading while out of prison, I thought he might use the opportunity for reflection.'
