THE Pat Sin Leng Range is described by mountaineering experts as a high-risk route for hikers, especially beginners.

One of the most difficult parts of the new Wilson Trail, opened just weeks ago by former governor Lord Wilson, it runs through the area characterised by deep gorges.

Chung Kin-man, promotions executive of the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, said the range was unsuitable for inexperienced hikers.

'I do not want to suggest that young students should not take the route but it is quite a risky one,' Mr Chung said. 'It should be okay if they are led by experienced hikers.' But he said even old hands could panic in the face of a blaze.

'This is especially dangerous on steep slopes such as those in the Pat Sin Leng Range.' South China Morning Post travel editor and experienced hiker Mike Currie said the area bisected by the Wilson Trail was daunting.

In parts, the range was so steep the valley below the trail 'plunges nearly vertically'.
