A CONMAN who posed as a fire safety officer to get money out of businessmen was yesterday sent to a training centre.
Between March 23 and May 4 last year, Fung Ka-wah, 20, convinced about a dozen shop owners to pay for adverts in what he claimed would be a fire prevention guidebook, or to donate goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, the District Court heard.
Fung, a delivery man, denied obtaining property by deception, but was found guilty.
The court heard his haul included radios, karaoke machines, watches, picture frames and jewellery boxes.
Fung would introduce himself as 'Inspector Wong' of the Fire Prevention Unit.
He also telephoned restaurants warning bosses of supposed safety inspections then 'invited' them to offer donations for the fire services' annual review.
