ONE of the oldest political action groups is to set up a panel to prepare nominations for the Selection Committee.

Honorary secretary-general of the Hong Kong Civic Association, Peter Chan Chi-kwan, said its members, including Preparatory Committee member Kai Yiu-ming, had held unofficial discussions on the issue.

But views were still to be finalised because ideas were being collected, and details on how the Selection Committee would be chosen had not been decided.

The association, founded in 1955, aims to promote economic, social, cultural and political welfare.

Mr Chan expected the panel to comprise five to nine members, with a view to putting forward 17 or 18 nominations.

'Many members, including District Board members and defeated candidates in the elections, have expressed interest in joining the Selection Committee,' he said, but declined to say exactly how many.

The association has several thousand members.
