A BANK deputy manager who embezzled more than $22 million from customer accounts by forging withdrawal slips was jailed for four years yesterday. Judge Beeson said the case was a breach of trust in which Wong Kam-wing, 39, abused his position to misappropriate clients' funds. The District Court judge added that the sum was substantial and there was no realistic possibility of restitution. The court heard Wong joined the Sheung Shui branch of Kwangtung Provincial Bank about 20 years ago and had moved up the ladder from trainee to deputy manager. He committed the offences because he was heavily in debt, and had later attempted to commit suicide, the court heard. Between February 1994 and October 1995, he stole money from accounts by presenting forged withdrawal or transfer slips. He admitted seven theft charges of more than $22 million but the actual loss was about $14.4 million. The judge took his guilty plea and clear record into account before sentencing.
