Chow Tai Fook nurtures budding London designers with jewellery-making expertise and exhibition at K11

Chow Tai Fook has once again pushed back the boundaries of design collaboration. The leading jeweller in the Greater China region has turned the unique design visions by students at London’s Central Saint Martins (CSM) College of Art, Design and Performance into exquisite precious jewellery and showcased them to jewel enthusiasts at K11 in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The unprecedented design collaboration initiated by China’s foremost jeweller Chow Tai Fook has culminated in an exhibition of five winning designs by the prestigious college’s students at K11 Atrium of Hong Kong’s premier art mall.

At the unveiling of the exhibition in late April, some of the winning students as well as CSM professors were on hand and engaged in exchanges of ideas with local design students. CSM is the alma mater of many world-acclaimed designers.

This visionary partnership is the brainchild of Adrian Cheng, Art Pioneer and Executive Director of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group. He has initiated this collaboration not only to tap into the design talent from the leading design institution in Europe. He also aims to cultivate a cross-continent design exchange and nurture the next generation of jewellery designers. By offering the students this rare opportunity to gain real-life design and jewellery fabrication experience, Chow Tai Fook also helps the students acquire insights in the vast and booming jewellery market in China, of which the jeweller is at the forefront.

Chow Tai Fook embarked on this amazing journey of design collaboration in September 2013 as it invited CSM’s jewellery design undergraduates and Master’s Degree students to develop unique creations based on a theme. Instructors at CSM, who are professional design practitioners themselves, met with Chow Tai Fook executives to discuss the specifics in the design brief before they provided guidance to around 70 participating students on the project requirements. Practical advice from Chow Tai Fook’s in-house creative team was offered as they flew to London for an interim review of the students’ initial ideas. The students gained important insights in the creative process and feedback. Mr Cheng headed a panel of judges to select the thirteen winning design concepts. Master craftsmen at Chow Tai Fook renowned workshop then transformed the students’ artistic visions into one-of-a-kind gem-studded precious jewellery with exquisite workmanship.
