AUSTRALIAN student Paul Cleary trumped a Kenyan trio of runners, headed by the great Moses Kiptanui, to land a surprise victory in the 1,500 metres at a Grand Prix athletics meet in Melbourne yesterday.

The 19-year-old Cleary clocked a personal best three minutes 38.49 seconds and defied all efforts by the Kenyans to run him down in the home straight.
