Summer Snow turns up heat for film awards

TOP actors, directors, writers and technicians are vying for a place in history after the nominations for this year's Hong Kong Film Awards were announced yesterday.

Summer Snow and Full Throttle threaten to sweep the board after receiving nominations for 10 awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Film Editing.

The works were directed by Ann Hui On-wah and Derek Yee Tung-sing respectively. The pair are also rival nominees for the Best Director award.

The three other films nominated for Best Film are The Day the Sun Turned Cold produced by Yim Ho, Rumble in the Bronx by Barbie Tung and Fallen Angels by Jeff Lau.

Hong Kong Film Awards Association chairman Ng See-yuen announced the nominations yesterday, saying low-quality films had flooded the industry in the past two years.

Mr Ng said he hoped this year's presentation would boost morale and encourage production of better quality films.
