PREMIER John Major, fresh from talks with Chinese Prime Minister Li Peng, is ready to meet legislators, executive councillors and Governor Chris Patten.

But other Hong Kong people - who have not been granted an audience with the visiting leader - are just as keen to get their messages across.

Retired Telecom employee Mr Cheng, 73, is worried about Mr Major maintaining good links with China so the 'young generation' will have better days.

'I am old and there is not much I want for myself. But Mr Major must maintain a good relationship with China, so Hong Kong will remain stable and prosperous. Then the young ones will not have to worry,' he said.

Primary school teacher Randy Choy Kam-leong, 25, said there appeared little the British Government would or could do to improve the livelihood of Hong Kong people, despite Mr Major's recent meeting with Mr Li.

'The British Government does not really care about Hong Kong people's daily problems. They care when it affects their business interests. Besides, John Major's political career is pretty rocky at the moment, making him less capable of dealing with Hong Kong's problems.' Sha Tin resident Ng Ni-kwok echoed the concern of legislators about visa-free access to Britain.
