I WOULD like to get the attention of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) on a case of discharge of raw domestic sewage into a local stream in Sai Kung which runs into a water quality control zone.
Recently, while hiking in Sai Kung West Country Park, I noticed that a stream was giving off a strong smell of raw sewage at the village of Pak Tam, about two kilometres from Pak Tam Chung.
It was not hard to find that it was due to discharge of raw domestic sewage, mainly human excreta, from the village.
While the old houses in the village would have their own septic tanks to contain and treat their sewage, it is less likely for the newly constructed houses.
There is a small church-run residents centre which, from my knowledge, is for helping drug addicts and has been there for some years. However, this time I noticed that there are some newly-constructed, two-storey buildings which are likely to be run by the church.
Some of these buildings are still undergoing interior furnishing. When all of these buildings are in use, there will be room for 100 or maybe even 200 more people in the village. The amount of sewage that would be generated is quite large and as I saw this time the sewage is discharged directly into a local stream. Already the stream is now grossly polluted by the discharge and it is not difficult to find out that this stream is running to the Sai Kung Hoi at Pak Tam Chung.
