ORIGIN Sources, a Hong Kong-based media company, has been appointed as the sole authorised overseas advertising and circulation agents for China Building Materials magazine. The state-run publication, which has a circulation of 40,000, is the only authorised monthly trade magazine for the building materials industry on the mainland. At present, 87.5 per cent of the circulation (35,000) is distributed in China, with Hong Kong receiving 3,500 copies (8.75 per cent). The rest is given away as promotion. Under the deal which begins with next month's edition, Origin will promote the magazine abroad to builders and manufacturers to build up the advertising base. Advertising for the China market will remain in-house. Alice Yu, sales manager for Origin, said a sales team of five would promote the Chinese-language magazine in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Europe and the United States. She said the company had targeted $5 million in advertising revenue for the first year. The 15-year-old publication has been averaging about 10 to 20 advertisements an issue. Ms Yu said Origin would like to increase this to 50. She said there was the possibility of an overseas bilingual edition being started towards the end of the year.
