MACAU is about to see the launch of an MMDS-delivered subscription TV network.
The network - created by Portugal Telecom International (formerly Marconi), Macau's Telesat Satellite Communications, M. G. Fok and a group of Macanese business interests - comes after seven years of planning.
Sources in Macau said the proposal was being examined by the Portuguese/Chinese Joint Liaison Group and a decision was expected 'within a few weeks'.
There are about 130,000 TV households in Macau and the cable system is expected to achieve a penetration of 12 per cent after 12 months of operations, rising to about 50 per cent within five years.
After two years of operation, the system should migrate to a hard-wire fibre-coaxial one which could also carry telephony.
The cable TV network will serve Macau's entire 18 square kilometres and estimated four million residents.
