Refrigerated container trucks could be used as temporary mortuaries if there were an air crash at the new airport, even though a mortuary will be built at Chek Lap Kok. The idea is being considered by Airport Authority staff about to draw up emergency procedures. A spokesman said there would not be enough room to handle a large number of dead passengers. Instead the mortuary car park has been designed to be big enough to allow about 10 freezer trucks to be parked in case of an emergency. 'The size of the morgue is not decided, but it won't be too large because it will form part of the airport medical centre. It's main purpose will be to handle dead bodies in transit,' said a spokesman. 'The refrigerated trucks would only be used for a short time. We would be sensitive to the size of the eventuality and the number of people involved,' she said. If an airliner came down at Kai Tak the dead would be taken to Kowloon public mortuary.
