TODAY: The Shout at The Wanch. The very hairy Danny Levine and his gang temporarily quit Lan Kwai Fong for Wan Chai. Hard groovin' covers and the odd original.

  Signal Eight at Brown Sugar. A Signal Eight show is a wonderful, wholly original combination of Zoe's black dress, John's corner-of-the-mouth ciggies and some of the most refreshing new music to be heard in Hongkong.

  Abeoma at Amoeba. The highly accomplished members of Amoeba's house band in a weekly gig.

 Tomorrow: Just for Jesse benefit at South Island School. Local musicians take to the stage to raise money for young Jesse Lawrence whose father, popular Hongkong musician Andy, died in an accident last year. Between 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Music and activities. Tickets $100, children free.

  Signal Eight at The Wanch.

  The Shout at Brown Sugar. The band's last gig before singer Levine quits Hongkong for good. They promise a major party.

  The Rock Gang at Amoeba. Formed last September, this all-local band has already played at The Wanch, Brown Sugar and Canton East. Step forward Jimmy, Andy, Benny and the shorter-haired Jimmy on drums.

 Sunday: Original music at Amoeba. Young local bands playing originals.

 Monday: The New China Blues Agency at the Cyrano Lounge, Island Shangri-La. 9pm. Covers of songs that used to get people in the mood.

  Abeoma at Amoeba.

  May Ip at Brown Sugar. She may be petite but feisty, folksy May has big fun and a big onstage presence.

 Tuesday: Blue Wail at Amoeba. William Tang and the rest of the blues rock boys return for a regular gig.

  Tryangle Quartet at Brown Sugar. Quality mainstream jazz.

 Wednesday: Han Shan at Amoeba. Experimental jazz which incorporates traditional instruments from around the world. Tim Wilson on sax, flutes, Chinese flutes and other wind instruments, Simon Hui on double bass and Nelson on keyboards and percussion.

 Thursday: Radio Free Hongkong: New Sounds from the Underground at Amoeba. Local alternative acts Peace Prohibited, Martin Dowds and P.N.S., hosted by Andy Ingkavet and his outfit, Blood Groove. 9pm to 1am. $25 admission.

  Blue Wail at Brown Sugar. From around 10pm.

  Plus, City Blues play at Portico in Citibank Plaza every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Acoustic guitar-based entertainment from John Hui, Richard Preston and guests.

  CC Ryders are back at JJs, the Grand Hyatt. Wednesday is band night at Beefy's Cabin, Canton Road, and jazz night at the Godown restaurant, Admiralty (9pm) where you will hear the Victoria Jazz Band; the La Bodega Night Spot is now making an effort to get Hongkong's best bands on stage every Wednesday night. The shows start late - after 11pm - so be prepared for a night out.

  Old favourites include the folk and rock at Hardy's, D'Aguilar Street, every night, while Ken Bennett and the Kowloon Honkers hammer out trad jazz favourites most nights at Ned Kelly's Last Stand.
