The number of activity centres for Filipino maids on their Sundays off will increase threefold this year, with at least 14 schools agreeing to open their doors.
In response to legislators' concerns about overcrowding in Central on Sundays, Director of Home Affairs Shelley Lau Lee Lai-kuen said the Government had been approaching schools all over the territory to become Sunday centres and so far 14 had agreed.
She said that her department was also liaising with the Housing Department to see if there were venues in public housing estates which could be used.
'We found many helpers work on public housing estates and these venues should be able to attract some of them to stay nearby rather than going to Central.' But she did not give any schedule for these centres to be made available for use or the amount of money involved in preparing them.
