Overseas study is top option

Although students who are interested in music can learn conducting by taking music courses as electives during their undergraduate studies or by attending private lectures, none of the tertiary institutions in the territory offers a degree programme in music conducting.

Mr Cheung said the majority of music conductors in the territory trained at overseas institutions at post-graduate level.

'Three years of music training in undergraduate studies is not adequate for a student to become a professional conductor,' he said.

Mr Cheung advises those who are interested in establishing a career in music conducting to acquire basic undergraduate music training in Hong Kong before heading overseas for further studies.
