Mainland Public Security Bureau officials are investigating the murder of a British businessman, found dead in a luxury Shenzhen hotel, it emerged yesterday.
David Swindells, 59, died of stab wounds in his room at the five-star Shangri-La Hotel last Sunday.
It is thought thieves were responsible.
Swindells' business colleague Kyu Sung said he had been out sight-seeing at the time of the fatal attack in the hotel.
Mr Kyu said: 'As I returned to the hotel, I intended to call David to invite him to join me for dinner, but then I saw that the lobby was swarming with police. I was shocked when they told me that he had been stabbed to death.' Swindells was a consultant for New York computer company Corning Incorporated, where he was described as a 'well-liked and well-respected high-achiever'. Swindells' wife told yesterday of how she worried at their home, in Oxfordshire, England, when he was away on business trips.
'He travelled a lot and I had prepared myself for the fact that one day he might not come back,' Joan Swindells said.
