Two men convicted of taking part in a gang fight which left one man dead and another injured had their convictions quashed because the jury had passed a nonsensical verdict.

The trial concerned the beating of Cheung Fuk-chuen by about 10 men in Yau Ma Tei. Lui Tai-yeung, 25, and Wai Ping-sun, 17, were found not guilty of his murder and manslaughter, but were convicted of wounding Lai Chi-hung on November 9. The verdicts conflicted because the prosecution had put its case on the basis the charges stood or fell together.
