Barry Burton

Wine: Thorin Syrah Grape: Syrah Region: Languedoc-Rousillon, France Vintage: 1994 For 12 centuries the name of Thorin has been a part of the history of Beaujolais. But like many other famous producers, Thorin has branched out into other regions of France.

During the past 10 years, wine producing in the south of France has undergone major changes. This region has an extremely hot summer and ripeness of the grapes is never a problem. Until recently, however, the techniques of wine making were. Now stainless steel fermentation tanks which are temperature-controlled can be found everywhere. In addition, cheap grape varieties have been replaced by noble varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.

While the wines do not aspire to the quality of good Bordeaux or Burgundy, they nevertheless can offer decent everyday drinking at a most reasonable price.

Thorin's Syrah, the classic grape of the northern Rhone, is a deep red in colour. There are fruit aromas of blackberries and bilberries on the nose.

The wine is medium-bodied and has good fruit character. Thorin also makes a Chardonnay. Both wines are ready for drinking now and will not improve with cellaring.
