ACCORDING to the mainland press, Mr Lee's eight years in power have not brought democratic freedoms but chaos, corruption and sexual anarchy. 'There are many ugly phenomena such as power-money exchange, rampant mafia, widespread gambling and pornography which are getting worse due to Western influence and loose government,' declared the China Youth Daily. Its readers are led to believe that the Taiwanese are living in a decadent world filled with perverted nymphomaniacs who frequent growing numbers of gigolo bars whose 'midnight cowboys' are allegedly driven to exhaustion. 'The high unemployment rate in Taiwan is one reason why young men become 'cowboys',' the article said. Other reports seek to portray the nouveau riche Taiwanese as dying from an explosion of AIDS, suffocating from air pollution and languishing under the corrupt rule of local officials. 'The social trend in Taiwan is to scorn poverty but not prostitution,' the paper said. The mainland propaganda machinery has described the island as suffering from political turmoil where legislators brawl in public and Mr Lee has delivered 'bogus democracy' quite unlike the real thing which exists on the mainland. Xinhua (the New China News Agency) claimed last week that Mr Lee had abrogated all authority into his own hands. 'He tried to consolidate his ruling position by relying on underground societies in Taiwan and politics based on money,' it said. 'All these have resulted in rampant underground societies and bribery in elections.'
