She is the woman credited with helping bring Chinese food into the homes of the American masses.

But award-winning author of five cookery books, Eileen Lo Yin-fei, takes such plaudits in her stride.

'I just like to cook,' she says simply. 'My first memories are of cooking with my grandmother Ah Paw in our kitchen.

'I could cook at the same time I could walk or talk; I can't ever remember a time in my life when I didn't cook.' Not content to stick to cookery books, this tiny powerhouse of a woman also lectures on regional Chinese cuisine at the China Institute of America, is a reviewer and writer on food and restaurants for The New York Times and various magazines.

If that isn't enough she also manages the time to accompany husband Fred Ferretti on his travels around the globe as columnist for Gourmet magazine.

The couple are currently in Hong Kong to research new restaurants, return to old favourites and take a few trips down memory lane in the city where they met and married in 1959.
