A WORLD recession? There was little to remind of the hard times yesterday as Hongkong Fashion Week piled on the glamour.

It came with panache at the end of the morning's Designers' Collection Show II, when local firm Ellememe showed that even casual, fun clothes can be given a rich look - in this case, filigree-fine glitter inspired by Chinese cloisonne enamels.

Even more effective was Ellememe's evening wear section.

The controlled approach found a few interpreters later in the day at the Hongkong Labels Show.

Among them were Lulu Bravo's boldly styled after-five ensembles in red, black, navy and white, Boo Gie, which took its cue from Chinese cut-work lace for a striking cocktail range in cream, beige and black, and the Grace Gorton label, which fielded romantic party wear in shades of blue.

Otherwise, the afternoon show's evening wear exhibitors seemed determined to deplete the territory's supply of sequins and beads, with Starlink's Peak collection taking the ostentation award - not a centimetre of fabric left unadorned - and Manful cominga close second.
