Hongkong Electric won the top General Management Award at the Asian Management Awards ceremony last year. The awards are presented to the best-managed companies in Asia and, out of a total of 1,550 nominations, seven organisations received an award. The citation referred to the company's transformation from a traditional provider of electricity to an evolving supplier of electrical services and mentioned its tariff re-structuring, education campaigns and efficient energy and lighting programmes which have improved customers' standards of living. Mention was also made of the environmental measures that the company has taken and its safety measures which cut accidents by 41 per cent in 1993 and a further 42 per cent in 1994. Hongkong Electric was also roundly praised for having received the smallest number of customer complaints. The annual awards, in their sixth year, are presented jointly by the Asian Institute of Management and the Far East Economic Review.
