Hong Kong is not known for its spacious flats - but that doesn't mean a determined handyman can't spread his wings.
Four-and-a-half years and 1,880 hours of work after setting out to build a single-seat glider, John Stockwell has rolled his craft out on to the tarmac.
'It's nice to do something at home. We are very much into the concept that the living room is for living in, not necessarily sitting in and watching television,' he said.
His project may have escaped the notice of curious neighbours, but it was forced into the open two weeks ago when the completed wings and fuselage were lowered 15 floors from the balcony of his 1,800 square feet flat in Wylie Path, Ho Man Tin.
'An understanding wife is more important than a big flat,' said Mr Stockwell, referring to his spouse, Patricia.
'It's the only glider ever built in Hong Kong and as far as I know it's the only aeroplane that's been built in Hong Kong.' His idea arose one day during a walk in the New Territories when he stopped to chat to a man flying a radio controlled plane.
