AUSTRALIAN trainers John Moore and Bruce Hutchison received telephone calls in Sydney last night that did not have them dashing out for a night on the town.

 When the duo return to Hong Kong they will face separate inquiries into the running and riding of two of their horses on yesterday's Sha Tin programme.

 Hutchison's well-performed Perkyman came home stoutly in the 1,000-metre fourth event under Ricky C. K. Chung and the vets later reported it had a wound to the mouth.

 The horse went off at 90-1 and how important the inquiry is remains to be seen. Perkyman is usually a lot more effective over a lot more ground than 1,000 metres.

 Champion trainer Moore will presumably be quizzed about the ride on Asian Glory who finished on quite well in the 1,400-metre final event. Again, the stayer has always been effective over longer.

 In the absence of both trainers, the inquiries were adjourned until Wednesday at Happy Valley.

 Well, it will give the two of them something to talk about on the plane back.

     It's not easy to lose a horse - after all, they are pretty big.

 The Jockey Club's security men, a vet and the usual handlers and drivers, turned up at Kai Tak yesterday to welcome the two runners from the Malayan Racing Association for next week's Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

 But only one horse walked down the ramp to be greeted by a puzzled Jockey Club corps.

 'You haven't got another one in there, have you?' was the query.

 But there was absolutely no sign of Zatopek III. Presumably a check of Lost Luggage proved unavailing because the Jockey Club squad returned to Sha Tin with just the one MRA galloper.

 The tip is that Zatopek III may have turned up at Kuala Lumpur lame, having been injured in transit and it was decided not to send him.

     It wasn't the send-off that Irish ace Mick Kinane would have desired. He hit the front on Golden Prosperity halfway down the straight in his last ride - but could not hang on and then ended up in the Inquiry Room.

 He was warned to make a greater effort to straighten up in future.

 The inquiry cost him a farewell drink as he had to depart hurriedly for home and then get to the airport for the London flight.

     Security chappies by the very nature of their job are not usually top of anyone's popularity list.

 But silver-haired Bob Brewer has a good rapport with the fourth estate as he goes about his regular duties.

 Brewer was all set to return to Blighty after serving the Jockey Club faithfully for a decade or so. But he's now going to stay on - a little bit to his surprise.

 'I am certainly not complaining. For a couple of reasons, I was ready to go back to the UK but I had absolutely no hesitation in saying 'yes' when I was offered a new contract.

 'I'm delighted to be staying on,' he said.

     There is something definitely wrong when a jockey has to dismount and lead his own horse to the barriers with a mounted handler watching him do it.

 It happened in the fourth event when English rider Darryll Holland got off Happy Associates about 150 metres from the barriers. It seems illogical to have a mounted handler nearby and yet not be able to lead horse and rider to the start.

     It was certainly good to see Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Damien Oliver finally land a winner yesterday.

 There had been suggestions that he should let his hair grow to the length he was sporting when Doriemus took the big November event.

 Damien had his locks shorn for charity soon after the Melbourne Cup.
