'People meter' used to calculate TV ratings
I refer to a letter by Harry Chan (South China Morning Post, March 25) about television ratings.
Television Broadcasts Ltd recently explained how such ratings are calculated but it seems some viewers are still confused.
The ratings information quoted by us is provided by SRG Research Services, an independent research house which is the only source of ratings information in Hong Kong. That company uses the 'people meter' system, polling almost 300 households.
The information collected is recognised by the television and advertising industries as well as the Government.
Point Break, referred to by Mr Chan, achieved a 'top audience share' of 100 per cent and an 'average share' of 82 per cent. Mr Chan is correct in noting that Mandy Patinkin won the 1995 Emmy Award for 'Lead Actor in a Drama Series'.
Jimmy Smits of NYPD Blue won the Golden Globe Award for 'Actor, Drama Series'.
