Survey questionnaires are usually despatched that way, but not so the one sent by Time magazine that arrived last week - especially after a US$1 note fluttered from the envelope.

The covering letter from Time 's Southeast Asian marketing manager Ms Alice Chan said the company wanted to ''establish perceptions and attitudes towards computer companies'', by asking respondents about their machines and the firms that produce them.

The dollar bill was included as a measure of Time 's gratitude for filling out the form, Ms Chan said.

Since she has not replied to calls, we are unable to tell readers if this ploy has succeeded in garnering more responses than normal. We also did not get the chance to ask Ms Chan if she had to get permission for the stunt.

Doubtless her motive is perfectly innocent, but we hope no one from the Independent Commission Against Corruption subscribes to Time.
