Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will soon ship AT&T's Advanced Server for UNIX workstations. The server will support NT Server's Network Operating System (NOS) and its domain functions on its HP-UX workstations.

The Advanced Server/9000 from HP integrates the HP-UX-based network with client and workgroup devices and offers one of the first instances of an implementation of Microsoft's networking technology on a UNIX platform.

Anthony Lai, the marketing manager for Hewlett-Packard Hong Kong, said: 'With Advanced Server/9000, an HP-UX-based system delivers a very high level of integration between PC workgroups and the enterprise. Customers can have complete interoperability between NT clients and servers and UNIX system applications.' The system will provide NT's file and print-management and security features for Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups and LAN Manager. All of this will run on top of HP-UX which is considered to be a robust enterprise-class operating environment, offering such things as scalability - something some experts have said is lacking in Windows NT.

Mark Anderson of the 3M Company said: 'For business-critical applications, we have selected HP-UX as our server of choice and NT for our client PCs. HP's Advanced Server/9000 product allows us to take advantage of the reliability of a UNIX environment while enjoying the advantages of NT.' The Advanced Server/9000 is based on AT&T's Advanced Server for UNIX systems (AS/U), version 3.51.

Carlo Cirillo, the assistant vice president of the Networking Sofware Product Group at AT&T, said: 'AT&T is pleased to be working with HP in bringing this technology to market. We believe this technology is strategically important for those customers who desire integration between existing UNIX system environments and Windows NT servers and clients.' A two-user license comes with the HP-UX 10.0 run-time environment. Users also have access to more than 12,000 UNIX system applications. It is also possible to access DOS-based Windows and Macintosh applications through various emulators.
