Brush-up planned for patriarch's image

Shenzhen will give patriarch Deng Xiaoping a new look later this year by erecting a new billboard poster of his image in the city centre.

The poster will be illuminated by special lighting to offer a better view of the party elder's picture at night, said the city's deputy propaganda chief Huang Xinhua .

'The composition of the new poster will still feature the image of Comrade Xiaoping. His new image will be more solemn, more kind and cordial,' Mr Huang said yesterday.

The official explained that a change of the poster was planned as the current one was easily damaged by bad weather and needed to be brushed up once a year to keep it in good shape.

'We feel we have to upgrade the quality of the poster through technical improvement,' Mr Huang said.

The new poster will be printed using a computerised air-brush technique that will make the picture more colourful and will last for three to five years, he said.

The new poster, with Shenzhen as the backdrop, is expected to be ready by the autumn.
