Plenty of lawyers are happy in their careers, but there are many lawyers, who, after years of work, are tired, exhausted, frustrated, and unhappy. Most unhappy lawyers want to leave, but stay in the law profession because they're not sure what other fields to pursue or what type of job would make them happy. Most lawyers state that the reason they pursued
legal studies was to make a difference and change the world, and the law is viewed as the perfect vehicle needed to drive the desired change in the world. This leaves lawyers confused as to what other alternative career options in law will pay well and provide them with meaning and self-worth.
Some lawyers looking for a new profession may find their calling as an author. Lawyers are often required to exercise their writing skills in their
legal studies, and this literary knowledge has lead many lawyers to successfully transform their writing skills into best-selling courtroom thrillers or even writing legal publishing, such as law school study guides. Becoming an author is a great fit for a younger attorney who loves to write and is interested in writing more than briefs, memos or other legal documents. Legal education helps future authors train in paying attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and acquiring great research skills.
Another great option for lawyers looking to change their career is a real estate broker. Property values are increasing, and that means it’s prime time to become a broker, especially for lawyers. A lawyer's ability to understand contractual and legal issues makes them more helpful to both clients and real estate professionals, making real estate a great choice for a second career. A bonus to being a lawyer, is that often times, the required steps for becoming a real estate broker are already met.
Of course, it's crucial to keep in mind that
legal studies can give students the required skills and knowledge for building a new business. Several people are scared off by legal issues involved in opening a new business, but lawyers can be confident in their ability to act as gatekeeper by recognising legal issues that need or don't need to be addressed. Starting a new business is ideal for attorneys who enjoy mentoring staff, have leadership capabilities, and are interested in certain types of product or industries. Lawyers who enjoy the pressure and reward of being accountable may find that starting a business is the best fit.
While it may be somewhat unrealistic to say that lawyers can do anything with a law degree, there truly are non-legal jobs out there with responsibilities that would greatly benefit from legal skill sets. The above examples are only a few options of alternative career choices in law that can provide financial incentive as well as professional and personal satisfaction. Some lawyers may find that after taking a break to pursue something different, the law profession becomes fresh again.
