The Governor stressed the province contributed little to the troops and the local economy had not been affected.

'This kind of drill is normal. An exercise is merely an exercise, not preparation for war. We give little for the troops,' he said after the closing of the provincial People's Congress.

China conducted the manoeuvres in a bid to influence Taiwan's presidential election.

Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui , condemned by Chinese media as a traitor, won the race by a landslide.
