Politics - boo; mad cow stories - who cares? The most vexing question to face Britain this week is of a much more serious nature.

What it concerns is a good attack on all we once held near and dear - yet more evidence that the royals are ordinary mortals. Yes, Princess Diana has cellulite.

What am I talking about? Well only the biggest story to break in the British tabloids this week, grabbing front pages and double spreads inside with close-up pictures and full medical analysis.

Cellulite, in case you do not suffer, is that 'unsightly fatty tissue' which tends to gather around the thighs of women of a certain age. Now the thighs in question have been carefully honed to what we had assumed was near perfection at the exclusive Harbour Club in Chelsea, where Princess Diana goes to work out every morning.

That was until a sneaking paparazzi took a close-up shot of her as she left at the weekend to reveal those tell-tale ripples which women, (dare I say much more than men) know as cellulite.

Let's be almost honest at least, throughout Britain conversation has been dominated by the thought that this most pristine of bodies is showing signs of age. 'Ha, ha,' we say, smirking, 'You are like the rest of us now.' Of course the papers have been split on the issue, as if backing the image of a slim and lithe Di, rather than that of Princess Paunchy might go more towards winning an award for their editors in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
